Spinnova contributes to Vuokko Nurmesniemi design pieces in Baltic Sea benefit

“There is no fashion, only time” - Vuokko Nurmesniemi

Spinnova is proud to stand by SAIMA Helsinki and legendary Finnish designer, Vuokko Nurmesniemi, in a charity collection and auction for the Baltic Sea Action. As part of the charity benefit, another fabulous Spinnova demo product is introduced: the ageless classic, Myllynkivi dress with a Pyörre print.

SAIMA is a new Finnish apparel brand that produces sustainable clothing in its own factory in Helsinki. In addition to its basic collection, SAIMA produces collaborative limited editions, meant to promote contemporary artists, designers and phenomena. Part of the profits from these collaborations are donated to charities chosen by the collaborators. Today, SAIMA along with Vuokko Nurmesniemi and Spinnova introduce the VUOKKO x SAIMA Helsinki limited edition.

SAIMA has made two Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi’s iconic Myllynkivi (millstone) dresses with a 100% wood-based fabric that is a blend of Spinnova’s sustainable fibre and lyocell. The dress fabric was printed with the classic, original Pyörre (vortex) print by the Finnish textile print house Printscorpio.

The two coveted, unique Spinnova Myllynkivi dresses will now be auctioned for charity.

“The Vuokko and Spinnova teams loved our idea, and we also included Printscorpio that works with both Vuokko and Spinnova already. Everyone is involved in this pro bono, so the entire profit from auctioning the dresses goes to a charity of Vuokko’s choice, explains founder of SAIMA Helsinki, Ville Hulkko.

The chosen charity is the Baltic Sea Action Group, who works to protect the Baltic Sea and the climate. The dresses are auctioned on the Stockholm Actionverk platform, starting on 27 January.

- We are honoured to be part of this tribute to Vuokko, for the Baltic Sea that we all love. We are also proud of how beautiful the dresses came out! Vuokko’s clothing stands the test of time in both design and quality, and never age with trends. This is the kind of fashion we want to promote, comments Spinnova’s Chief Commercial Officer Lotta Kopra.

Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi is the undisputed pioneer of Finnish apparel and fashion design. Her ground-breaking work has gained recognition both domestically and internationally ever since the 1950’s. The Myllynkivi dress was originally designed by Vuokko in 1964. This classic can be seen in e.g. the collections of the New York Museum of Modern Art and the Finnish Design Museum in Helsinki.
