Spinnova teams up with premium bag brand, ASK Scandinavia

Spinnova and ASK Scandinavia collaborate to bring a naturally dyed tote bag to the market

Dyed with coffee waste

The Nova tote is made with fabric that contains 30% wood-based SPINNOVA® fibres and 70% cotton. The tote bag combines ASK Scandinavia’s minimalist style with durability and usability, making it perfect for everyday use. It is available in amber, a colour derived from Paulig’s coffee waste.

Coffee waste origin

Paulig’s coffee roastery in Vuosaari, Helsinki, is one of Europe’s largest. The roastery delivers approximately 60 million coffee packages annually and produces more than 200 different end-products. Although the roastery processes are optimised to produce a minimal amount of waste, inevitable coffee ground waste still occurs.

Natural Indigo Finland

Natural Indigo Finland has created a range of natural dye colours from coffee waste, ranging from yellow and orange to even blue shades. The fabric of ASK Scandinavia’s Nova tote bag has been dyed using Natural Indigo Finland’s dyeing method, a more sustainable alternative to conventional dyeing. For example, natural tannins are used in the method as excipients, making them a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative.

Adding to Spinnova's fibre product application range

Spinnova has previously announced that, as part of its strategy, it will focus on fibre market development in addition to technology sales and development. The collaboration with ASK Scandinavia and Natural Indigo Finland is an example of increasing the addressable market for Spinnova’s fibre for its technology customers, introducing premium handbags and natural dyeing as a new addition to the fibre product application range.
